How To Save Your File For Print

From Illustrator

When your document is fully designed and ready to be submitted, complete the following steps to ensure that it prints they way you have designed it.

  • Select "Effect > Document Raster Effects Setting"
  • Select your Color Model (CMYK, or Grayscale)
  • Set the Resolution to Other and enter 200dpi
  • Click OK

After configuring the document settings save your file:

  • Select File > Save As and select Adobe PDF as your file type
  • Set your Options to Custom
  • Under General, set File compatibility to Acrobat 4.0 or higher
  • Under Compression set the Average Downsampling to 200 ppi

It is also beneficial to convert all of your text to outlines before creating your PDF. To do so:

  • Select all of your text
  • Select Type > Create Outlines

You now have a PDF to submit for publication.

With Adobe Acrobat Professional

  • Open your PDF in Acrobat
  • Select Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
  • Apply the following settings:
    • Document Colors: Device Gray Convert
    • Action: Convert
    • Destination Space Profile: Gamma 1.8
    • Destination Space Converstion Options: Embed Profiles as Source Color Space
  • Select OK

From PhotoShop

If you have created your ad with Photoshop, you can simply save it as an EPS file, but before you save everything, ensure that the formatting is correct.

  • Goto Image > Mode > CMYK Color to set the proper colouration
  • Goto Image > Image Size and ensure that under Document Size the Resolution is set to 200 dpi
  • Select File > Save As > Photoshop EPS

You now have an EPS file to submit for publication.

From another program

If you have created your ad in another program and are unsure how to create a PDF using that program, you can save the file in its native format and convert it to PDF by going to http://createpdf.adobe.com. This site requires registration (which is free).

While this will create a PDF of your document, it doesn not guarantee that the file will be fully optimized for printing, and The Eyeopener can not guarantee the quality of your ad.

If you are unsure about how to produce an acceptable file for publication, please contact our Design Director for assistance. We'd be happy to work with you to make your ad look its best. After all, if you look good, we look good.
